From the desk of Jamie Cosson, Executive Director...

November 26th, 2012

Greetings Camp Families,

I hope that all is well with your family! It is wonderful to hear the sounds of children enjoying the outdoors as we conclude our school outdoor education season. Holiday overnight camp is coming soon, December 21-23 and is an awesome camp program during the holidays. We are spending plenty of time discussing summer camp and building on the successes of 2012.  For the 2013 season, our staff and board of managers have been busy analyzing evaluations and recommending positive changes. I can assure you that we have listened very carefully to the many children that attend our camps – and of course to you, our parents.

For example, we will build on the successes of last summer by continuing to focus our attention on creating the best possible cabin life experience, friendship development and daily activities that help your child build important life and social skills. All these components focus on our primary goal of giving every child a safe and fun experience that builds self-esteem, and prepares them for the challenges of life.

Also, in order to meet rising food, utility, and staffing costs, we are making changes to 2013 fees, including adjustments to our overnight camp rate and a simplification of day camper pricing that eliminates the tiered pricing system and replaces it with a single rate. The new single fee structure for overnight and day campers will not affect our scholarship program and financial assistance will still be available.

Even with these pricing adjustments, we hope you will be pleased to know that even as we invest in providing a truly quality camp experience and improved camp facilities, Camp Weaver is still the lowest-priced overnight camp and among the lowest outdoor sports and adventure camps in the region. We are proud to be a “hidden gem” among summer camps.

Please see our web site for summer 2013 rates and schedule information. And do not miss our NEW $50 early bird discount for overnight camp and $20 for traditional day camp! We hope you will take advantage of this great offer to save on camp tuition and reserve your child’s spot now for next summer. But hurry, this offer is only available to returning camp families through January 1st, 2013!

I am always open to feedback, suggestions and questions. You can send them to Jamie@campweaver.org or call our camp phone number (336) 697-0525. I look forward to seeing you soon!

Wishing you the best!

Sincerely,
Jamie Cosson
Executive Director

Camp Confidence Helps Young Author

At YMCA Camp Weaver, one of our campers is finding the confidence to pursue her dreams.  Victoria Gonzalez has published her first novel at just 14 years old!  “Guardians of the Gate: Disappearance of Code” is the first book in what will become a trilogy series.  Fans can order the book on Amazon in hard copy or for the Kindle!
Victoria’s mom Melissa Stephens says Camp Weaver has played an important role in Victoria’s success.  She says camp has given her daughter the confidence to share her talents and inspire others to reach for their goals.

Cookouts at Camp

Cookouts at Camp

Starting this summer we are hosting a fun family cookout for your camper's Sunday send-off.

We'll fire up the grill during check-in for overnight camp.  (3pm-4pm)
Feed the family for less than $5 dollars a plate and ALL proceeds will go to our "Send a Kid to Camp" scholarship fund.

Every summer we team up with families and community organizations to provide children with the camp experience.  Our "Send a Kid to Camp" campaign funds:
  • Need-based scholarships.
  • Camp sessions for children in foster care.
  • Camp sessions for children who have a parent in active military duty.

All children benefit from making friends, learning independence, and trying new activities at camp.  We do not turn anyone away from Camp Weaver because of inability to pay but we rely on YOU to help us provide this invaluable experience to kids.

Our Garden Grows

Camp Weaver is all about getting outdoors and learning while doing.  We are adding to our lesson plan with an expansion in the organic garden.  This year Camp Weaver is the recipient of the local BB&T Lighthouse project.  BB&T donated thousands of dollars for a new greenhouse and chicken coop in our garden, along with the sweat equity to build the new structures!  Volunteers also helped us weed and mulch the garden to prepare for the growing season.

Our philosophy for outdoor learning is coming alive with the garden expansion.  Campers and school students now have the opportunity to learn about healthy eating, the food supply, caring for plants and animals, and other topics all while experiencing the garden first-hand.  They will gain learning experiences that can not be created in the classroom, and ones they will remember for a long time to come!

We are incorporating the organic garden in to our summer camp schedule.  We plan to have campers harvest the fruits and vegetables from the garden and use them in camp recipes.  Campers will also be responsible for caring for our flock of chickens and collecting eggs.

Thanks to BB&T for choosing Camp Weaver for this year's Lighthouse Project.  We are very excited about the new learning opportunities for kids in the organic garden!
